"D.J."/Transfer from Lanier 4/"A lusty lover and a bachelor."
Updated Information: AKA - “Dee Jay”. I had moved to Eastman from Macon due primarily to a severe lack of interest in Lanier Sr. High School. Going to live with my Grandparents seemed an ideal way to renew my interest in school. I had spent a short time in the Eastman Grammar School while in the fourth grade. While there, I had “fallen” for a cute little girl in my class and never forgot her. As it turned out, my stint at Eastman High was fun at first and I was able to improve academically. Sadly, some petty little bureaucratic egos (and my stubborn arrogance) kept me from enjoying the walk across the stage with all of you. I was required to come to the school after graduation and get my certificate like a “pariah” (as maybe I was, after all.) Next came an appointment to the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado. Again a disappointment. Although I had been flying for about 3 years (had my own plane, a little J-3 Piper Cub), the induction physical in Atlanta discovered that I was sight impaired (20/25) and could not fly jet fighters and was denied acceptance to the Academy. Joined the Air Force anyway when promised I could enter O.C.S., obtain my commission THEN fly with glasses!(A lie!) After completing my USAF career, I came “home” to Macon, worked a while for W. Elliott Dunwoody, Jr., then to Atlanta for night school and a career as an architect. Married Evelyn (Deaton) Swift April 3rd. and 4th., 1971 in Honolulu, Hawaii. (another story I won’t bore you with.) In 1973, after our son, Dan, (Evelyn’s by prior marriage), completed college and went out on his own; Evelyn sold her business, I sold my design-build company, we sold the house, stored the furniture, bought a Holiday Rambler RV and a GMC Suburban and took off on what was to be a five year odyssey. We traveled nearly every state, including Alaska and every province of Canada. We would travel until we found a place of interest, stop and set up our “home” and explore the area. Sometimes I would work at some type of job. (We were not independently wealthy but living expenses were very low.) It’s amazing how inexpensively people can live with no long term debt obligations. All we needed was gasoline, food and insurance. After spending almost two years in Canada (we had immigrated), we returned to the U.S., stored the vehicles at Dan’s home and left for Europe. After touring most of Europe and visiting friends in Germany and Switzerland, I asked Evelyn where she preferred to live. I had an idea it would be in some mountain range we had visited. I told her she could choose any area from the Alps to Mauna Loa. She chose the SMOKY MOUNTAINS! (LOL) (Very “home loving” Lady!) We “took up residence” on a small farm in Knoxville, Tennessee. After about 4 years in Knoxville, Paul McCollister, owner of Jackson Hole Ski Corp. asked us to move to Jackson, Wyoming and work for the Ski Corp. (We had met him years earlier during our sabbatical.) We lived in Teton Village (near Jackson) at the foot of the ski slopes until 1983 when the market for luxury condominiums decreased. (We were designing and building condominiums and other developments for the Ski Corp.) Left Jackson December, 1983, came back to Georgia to visit relatives then moved to Dallas, Texas. Worked for a fairly well known architect and eventually bought him out in 1985.
Left Dallas for Macon in 1997 due to my Father’s illness and the fact that we were sick also.
Sick of Texas. (LOL) When my Father died and Mother went to an assisted living home in Augusta, we moved here to Marietta. Our son lives near us and I am thoroughly enjoying architecture with a very good company, Chapman Coyle Chapman, Architects. We have designed a number of Country Clubs and Golf Clubs (and other type buildings) all over the world. (http://www.cccaarchitects.com/).
Personal:
68 years old (April 18, 1937)
Married for 34 years to a most wonderful, beautiful lady.
Have one son, Dan Swift, and his wife, Debi, a granddaughter, Leslie and grandson, Darren.
Two sisters, Gloria, in Augusta and Carol in Bettendorf, Iowa.
Registered architect working for Chapman Coyle Chapman, Architects.
Still fat.Still ugly.
Not poor but neither are we wealthy except for loving family and good friends.
Fairly healthy. (Bad eyes, hard of hearing, bad teeth and out of condition not withstanding.)
Politically conservative. (Told friends I voted the straight “Librarian” ticket! LOL)
Hopefully I have matured and become a nicer person since my High School days. There are some periodically recurring memories of actions and demeanor of which I still have deep regrets. Does one ever completely forget or fully forgive oneself of terrible misdeeds committed as a naive youth with “complexes”? There, that is more than anyone ever wanted to know about “Dee Jay”. I am choosing this manner of communicating this information to avoid boring people if I attend a reunion. If you would be willing to share some parts of your life over these past 50+ years, I would love to know all you wish to divulge.

Sincerely,

David (Dee Jay)

Your “Last Will and Testament” in 1955 was “I, Jewell Hickman, bequeath my title as “Most Dependable Girl” to the ‘most dependable girl’ in the Junior Class.” Comments: Boy have I been dependable; Depended here, depended there etc. HA!
Your class prophecy was “Jewell Hickman is singing regularly in a trio on the Arthur Godfrey show.” Comments: I did not pursue that one nor did I make it. Who is Arthur Godfrey?
